Arms Race
One of the most famous parts of the cold war was the arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It was a competition to see who could have the most nuclear weapons. The U.S. referred to its first atomic bomb as the Manhatten Project. To end W.W.II the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Soviets, close behind tested their first atomic bomb in 1949. By doing this both countries showed how powerful they were. Then in 1952 the U.S. tested the first Hydrogen bomb. This bomb uses nuclear fusion, while an atomic bomb uses nuclear fission. This bomb is also more destructive than the atomic bomb.
The next invention was the ICBM. This was a Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles that allowed a Nuclear Bomb to have a range of 3,500 miles. The Soviet Unison was the first to test an ICBM in 1957. Another advancement was the Minuteman Missile. It was an ICBM that could be launched in a minute. Today the US posses 7,700 Active nuclear bombs and Russia possesses 8,500 bombs.
